Outrage over ‘hypocritical’ media coverage of Titanic sub emerges on social media

After the recent sinking of a migrant ship in the Mediterranean that killed 80 people and left over 500 missing, social media users are calling out mainstream media and accusing them of hypocrisy in their coverage of the missing Titanic-exploring submarine. The submarine, named the Titan, has dominated headlines since its disappearance on Sunday and news outlets have carried round-the-clock reporting, live blogs, explainers and background information about the five people on board. However, social media users have criticised the disparity in public sympathies, as news outlets have remained relatively silent about the sinking of a boat carrying an estimated 750 people. Users are highlighting the wealth difference between those on board, as each ticket for the deep-dive expedition cost $250,000, while the majority of passengers on the migrant ship were reportedly from war-torn and economically challenged countries. Twitter users also expressed dismay at the disparity between rescue efforts in the two disasters. The United Nations refugee agency has said that the shipwreck could be the second-deadliest disaster ever recorded in the Mediterranean.
