Oregon State and Washington State Fight for Stability in Pac-12 Shake-Up

Oregon State and Washington State find themselves in a fight for stability and relevance in the rapidly changing landscape of college sports. While other schools in the Pac-12 conference secure new affiliations and reshape their futures, these two land-grant universities are left searching for a place to call home.

As major research institutions located in true college towns, Oregon State and Washington State have a distinct small-town feel that sets them apart from their conference counterparts. They have a long history of competing in the premier conference on the West Coast, dating back to 1917 when the Cougars joined the Pacific Coast Conference.

However, in just one week, the century of stability these universities enjoyed has been upended. The Pac-12 is on the brink of collapse, with schools like Washington and Oregon heading to the Big Ten, while Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah are bound for the Big 12. Stanford and California are even in talks with the ACC. In the midst of all this turmoil, Oregon State and Washington State are left trying to find their place.

On Tuesday, Oregon State unveiled the massive renovations to its football stadium, Reser Stadium, which cost over $160 million. The stadium upgrade is a testament to the university’s commitment to its athletic program. However, despite the excitement of the renovations, uncertainty hangs in the air. While Pac-12 football will still be played in the stadium this year, the question of what lies beyond remains unanswered. Players, coaches, fans, and alumni are left wondering where the future of Oregon State football lies.

Washington State also finds itself in a similar state of uncertainty and financial strain. The university has invested millions in infrastructure improvements to its athletic facilities, with hopes that TV revenue would offset the costs. Unfortunately, the expected financial boost from the current Pac-12 media rights deal did not materialize, and Washington State announced a $11.5 million deficit in its athletic department in June. Being left out of the recent realignment discussions only adds to the financial burden Washington State faces.

Both universities remain committed to fighting for stability and a secure future. Oregon State’s athletic director, Scott Barnes, assured that they are doing everything possible to put their student athletes in the best position. He emphasized their dedication to the Beaver Nation and their relentless efforts to navigate the uncertain landscape of college sports.

Washington State’s head football coach, Jake Dickert, echoed the sentiment of determination and resilience. He emphasized that, regardless of where they end up, Washington State will be a flagship institution in their new conference. Both universities are actively exploring their options and striving to find the stability and support they need.

As the Pac-12 landscape continues to shift and other schools make strategic moves, Oregon State and Washington State are holding on, determined to find their place in this ever-changing collegiate sports environment. It may be a challenging journey, but these institutions are fighters through and through, ready to face whatever comes their way.
