Oregon Ducks Special Teams Struggle: Lowest Results Since 1980 Pose Urgent Need for Improvement

The Oregon Ducks football team has a rich history of success, particularly in their special teams unit. Over the years, they have consistently been one of the top-ranked teams in terms of punt and kickoff returns. However, last season’s dismal performance in these areas has raised concerns and highlights the urgent need for improvement.

In the 2022 season, the Ducks averaged just 18.81 yards per kickoff return, ranking a disappointing 90th nationally. Their punt return average of 4.92 yards per return was even worse, placing them 106th out of 131 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. These numbers represent the lowest results for the program since at least 1980.

The decline in special teams performance is particularly puzzling considering the Ducks’ history of success in this area. In the past, they have had standout players like Jevon Holland, De’Anthony Thomas, LaMichael James, and Kenyon Barner making significant contributions as returners. The emergence of talented players in the skill positions should provide Oregon with more options in the return game.

Head coach Dan Lanning understands the importance of special teams in winning football games. He believes that every good player on the team should be able to contribute on special teams. Lanning stated, We think that every single player that’s a good player for us should be able to start on special teams if you’re an elite player.

To address the poor performance, the Ducks are exploring different options for returners. Running backs Troy Franklin, Bucky Irving, Noah Whittington, and Jordan James have been practicing returning kicks throughout the offseason and fall camp. Additionally, cornerbacks like Nikko Reed have taken reps with the group.

Running backs coach Carlos Locklyn stressed the significance of special teams in building teamwork and selflessness. He believes that putting the team first is essential and that being a running back means being a well-rounded football player who can contribute wherever needed.

Bucky Irving, who had a successful season as a running back last year, also expressed his love for special teams. He recognizes that it can change the game and believes it should be taken seriously.

In recent years, kickoff returns have become less common due to a rule change that allows teams to take possession at the 25-yard line after a fair catch on kickoffs between the 25-yard line and the goal line. Nevertheless, the Ducks remain committed to fielding the best kickoff returners regardless of injury concerns.

Punt returns have also decreased in frequency. The Ducks had 76 punt returns over the past five years, compared to 100 returns from 2013 to 2017. Kris Hutson, who had 10 punt returns last season, remains in the mix, but transfers Tez Johnson and Gary Bryant Jr. seem to be ahead in the competition.

Oregon’s special teams coordinator, Joe Lorig, emphasizes the need to change the game on special teams. To achieve this in the 2023 season, it may be necessary for the Ducks to make personnel changes and find the right players who can make an impact in the return game.

Improving the special teams unit will be crucial for the Ducks’ success in the upcoming season. They understand the importance of field position and will be determined to rectify their subpar performance from last year. With talented players and a commitment to excellence, Oregon aims to return to their former glory on special teams.
