The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) recently hosted a captivating concert by the al-Nour wal-Amal Orchestra, a talented group of blind and visually impaired women and girls. The event, sponsored by the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) in celebration of its 125th anniversary, left the audience enthralled.

The orchestra treated the audience to a mesmerizing performance of Egyptian, oriental, and western classical music, showcasing their skills on string, brass, and wooden instruments. Their powerful vocals, as always, were exceptional and mesmerizing. The audience eagerly engaged with the pieces played and sang, including iconic Egyptian classics by Sayed Darwish and Daoud Hosni. The concert was attended by notable individuals such as former ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from NGOs, and numerous music enthusiasts.

The Nour wal-Amal Music Institute, established in 1971 by Istiklal Radi, founder of the al-Nour wal-Amal Association, provides care and education for blind girls. Radi, along with Samha al-Kholy, former President of the Egyptian Academy of Arts and former Dean of the Cairo Conservatory of Music, collaborated to develop the musical talents of blind women and girls, offering them a creative outlet to express their emotions. The students attending the Music Institute receive comprehensive education, participating in the national education program in the morning and the Music Institute program in the afternoon.

The Nour wal-Amal Orchestra, comprising blind girls and women aged 15 to 55, is unique. It is the only chamber orchestra in the world entirely composed of blind musicians, performing both western classical and oriental music. With their extraordinary performances, the orchestra has captivated audiences in Egypt and beyond.

The NMEC is renowned for hosting concerts and cultural activities that attract wide attention and appreciation. Ahmed Ghoneim, NMEC’s Managing Executive Director, emphasizes that these cultural activities contribute significantly to the museum’s role as a cultural and communal hub, supporting art and culture. He adds that NMEC is committed to providing support to individuals with special needs, affirming its dedication to an inclusive community.

Located in Fustat, Cairo, the NMEC offers visitors a comprehensive overview of Egypt’s rich history and culture, covering various historical periods from the Predynastic and Ancient Egyptian eras to the Greco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic, and modern contemporary times. The museum’s exhibits educate visitors about Egypt’s heritage and showcase its art. In line with its purpose, the NMEC conducts various programs and activities to raise awareness of Egyptian art and cultural heritage.
