Oprah Winfrey Portrait — Featuring the Color Purple — Unveiled at National Portrait Gallery
WASHINGTON – Oprah Winfrey’s portrait was unveiled at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery on Wednesday, showcasing the media mogul against a backdrop of a prayer garden at her California home. The painting by Chicago artist Shawn Michael Warren captures Winfrey holding a sprig from an olive tree. The portrait, which stands nearly 7 feet tall, will be displayed on the gallery’s first floor.
Winfrey, donning a flowing purple dress, explained her choice of color during the unveiling. Contrary to speculation that it was in connection with the upcoming release of a musical remake of the film that kickstarted her career, Winfrey revealed a deeper meaning behind her choice. I chose to wear the color purple because for me, that color has been seminal in my life, Winfrey shared with the crowd.
Warren, the artist behind the portrait, emphasized the significance of having a Chicago native represent Winfrey. You could have chosen anyone, but you saw fit that an artist from the place you called home during your rise to prominence should be given this honor, Warren expressed. Winfrey’s involvement in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple was a major milestone in her career, laying the groundwork for her future endeavors, including her iconic talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran for over 25 years. Her book club also generated best-selling titles. In 2013, Winfrey received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Kim Sajet, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, praised Winfrey’s cultural contributions and philanthropy, stating that she demonstrated an unparalleled ability to connect with people and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves.
During her remarks at the unveiling, Winfrey also took the opportunity to promote the upcoming release of The Color Purple movie, in which she serves as a producer. She urged the audience to get their tickets for the film, which hits theaters on Christmas Day.
