Opposition parties have slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comments on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with the Congress saying that he was making such remarks only to divert attention from real issues like unemployment and Manipur violence. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi also questioned whether the country’s pluralism would be snatched away in the name of the UCC.
Congress general secretary, organisation, K.C. Venugopal, said that the Prime Minister must address the real issues facing the country, such as unemployment, price rise, and Manipur, which has been burning for 60 days. Why has the PM not uttered a single word? These are all diversionary issues. He wants to run away from the real issues of the country, that is why they are only trying to divert the issues, he added.
Owaisi also expressed his concern over the UCC, stating that the proposed code was against the basic features of the Constitution. He raised questions about the government’s possible motives behind implementing the UCC and whether it would lead to a loss of the country’s pluralistic nature.
The Prime Minister had earlier called for a debate on the UCC, which would provide a common set of laws governing various religious communities in India. Modi had said that the UCC was necessary to address the country’s growing population and diversity, and to ensure that everyone gets equal rights.
However, opposition parties have accused the government of using the UCC as a tool to further its political agenda, rather than focusing on issues that are more pressing for the country.
