Opposition leaders are set to hold their third meeting in Mumbai in an effort to strengthen their united front against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections, according to Congress sources. The meeting, scheduled to take place on August 31 and September 1, will be conducted under the banner of the Indian National Developmental Democratic Alliance (I.N.D.I.A).
The decision to form a united front against the NDA comes as opposition parties aim to challenge the ruling government’s hold on power. The Supreme Court’s recent decision to stay the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case, in which he allegedly made a remark using the surname ‘Modi’, coincided with news of the opposition’s third meeting. Rahul Gandhi’s suspended two-year sentence allowed him to challenge his conviction, but it led to his disqualification as a member of the Lower House of Parliament.
The first opposition meeting, hosted by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was held in Patna in June, followed by a second gathering in Congress-ruled Karnataka. The united opposition parties are intensifying their electoral preparations in anticipation of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and upcoming assembly elections in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram.
During a meeting earlier this month in Bengaluru, 26 opposition parties officially named themselves the I.N.D.I.A alliance. Their aim is to present a joint front against the BJP-led NDA government.
