Letter: Eliminating DEI initiatives wrong
In this most recent round of efforts to return to the so-called good old days, the focus has shifted towards abolishing diversity, equity, and inclusion/DEI initiatives (see LB1330).
We all know that opponents of DEI initiatives are currently laser-focused on trying to ensure that people of color and those from the LGBTQ+ spectrum are neither seen nor heard. The rash of efforts to ban books around the country and limit K-16 curricula also demonstrates that point.
Apparently, this moral panic centers on the fear that children and young adults might catch cooties from being exposed to the lives and experiences of minority groups.
All students should have an opportunity to learn and broaden their horizons. All means all, including the children of those who like to generate moral panics.
I am certain, if asked, most young people would tell these crusaders that such protection from human diversity, from the facts of life and history are neither needed nor desired. And if you can’t even get a decent education in Nebraska, why stay or come here?
My advice: Be careful what you ask for. Stripping DEI programs from local schools and universities is not only completely counterproductive but outright mean-spirited and embarrassing.
Fellow Nebraskans, consider that you might actually get what you asked for: Conformity, inequity, and exclusion. Hmm, perhaps we already have the right slogan? Nebraska, it’s not for everyone. Please urge your senators to oppose LB1330.
