The South East Greenway in Co Wexford, Ireland has marked a significant milestone with the opening of its initial 6km stretch. The new pathway, which connects New Ross to Glenmore, enhances tourism and promotes active travel in the region. The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has invested €8 million in developing this section of the Greenway, exemplifying the government’s commitment to high-quality cycling infrastructure.

The South East Greenway follows the route of the disused New Ross to Waterford Railway, providing a 24km off-road trail for cycling and walking enthusiasts. This picturesque pathway traverses the beautiful countryside of South Kilkenny and offers splendid views of the Pink Rock area and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge.

Not only does the Greenway provide a scenic and environmentally friendly option for commuters traveling between Waterford and New Ross, but it also serves as an attractive amenity for visitors to the area. It is designed to link the Norman Town of New Ross to the Viking city of Waterford along the banks of the River Barrow.

This project is a joint initiative of Wexford County Council, Kilkenny County Council, and Waterford City & County Council, with support from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. The South East Greenway is part of a larger plan to establish a Greenway network connecting St Mullins in Carlow to the Waterford Greenway and Dungarvan. Travelers can explore the River Barrow by foot, following the Greenway to Kildare, and then continuing their journey along the Grand Canal to Dublin.

Addressing the significance of this new route, TD Jack Chambers expressed his delight at the opening, stating that it is just the beginning of a fantastic route that will greatly benefit the South East region. Furthermore, the Greenway will encourage increased levels of cycling and walking, reducing reliance on private cars for leisure activities, tourism, and commuting.

With the addition of the South East Greenway, Ireland now boasts a total of seven Greenways. The Waterford Greenway, opened in 2017, spans 46km and offers a car-free pathway from Waterford City to Dungarvan, providing breathtaking views of the Comeragh Mountains and the scenic Copper Coast.

Other notable Greenways include the Great Western Greenway, which stretches for 42km along Clew Bay, the Old Rail Trail connecting Athlone and Mullingar, the Limerick Greenway, and the Royal Canal Greenway, the latter being the longest off-road Greenway in Ireland at 130km. The recently opened Suir Blueway in County Tipperary combines land-based and water-based trails, making it a unique addition to the Greenway network.

The opening of the South East Greenway signifies an important step forward for Ireland’s commitment to promoting sustainable and active travel options. As the government continues to invest in high-quality cycling infrastructure, these Greenways offer both locals and visitors the opportunity to explore Ireland’s natural beauty while prioritizing environmentally friendly modes of transportation.

In the coming years, it is expected that the South East Greenway, particularly its connection with the Waterford Greenway, will attract a greater number of tourists to explore Ireland’s Ancient East. With its stunning views, rich heritage, and commitment to sustainable travel, the South East Greenway is set to become a valuable asset for both the region and the country as a whole.
