OpenAI’s ChatGPT app has made its way to Android, expanding its availability to more countries. The Android app is now accessible for users in the U.S, India, Bangladesh, and Brazil, with plans to extend availability to additional countries in the coming week. In late May, the iOS version was made available for download in over 150 countries. The launch of ChatGPT on Android was expected, as OpenAI had previously announced plans to add support for the operating system after releasing its iOS app.
Both the iOS and Android versions of ChatGPT can be used free of charge, but users also have the option to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month. This subscription offers faster chatbot response times and priority access to updates. The new Android app offers similar features as its iOS counterpart, allowing users to sync their chat histories across multiple devices and interact with ChatGPT using voice commands, thanks to Whisper, an open-source speech recognition model released by OpenAI last year.
Initially powered by the GPT-3.5 neural network, ChatGPT has since been upgraded to the latest GPT-4 model. GPT-4 provides more accurate interpretation of user instructions and is less susceptible to AI hallucinations. OpenAI conducted extensive testing, including simulated versions of the U.S. bar exam and other academic tests, to evaluate GPT-4’s capabilities. Impressively, the chatbot achieved a score in the top 10% of test takers in the simulated bar exam.
One significant improvement in GPT-4 is its ability to process image input. For instance, users can upload a photo of a street sign and ask the model to translate the text it contains. This feature was not available in GPT-3.5, the model that powered the initial version of ChatGPT. Although the Android and iOS versions of ChatGPT do not currently support image input, it is possible that OpenAI will introduce this capability in future updates.
In addition, OpenAI previewed ChatGPT Business, a paid edition of the chatbot designed for enterprises and professionals who require more control over their data and user management features. It is yet to be seen whether this version will be integrated into the Android and iOS apps in the future.
Overall, OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT on Android expands its accessibility to more countries, giving users the convenience of utilizing this AI-powered chatbot on their Android devices. With continuous advancements in models like GPT-4 and the potential introduction of image input capabilities, OpenAI is striving to enhance the user experience and provide valuable AI-powered interactions.
