OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Expresses Displeasure with ChatGPT’s Name

OpenAI’s CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman, has voiced his disdain for the name of the AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, during a recent appearance on Trevor Noah’s podcast. Altman stated that he found the name horrible, but acknowledged that it might be too well-established to change.

In the podcast, Altman engaged in a conversation with Noah and suggested alternative names for the chatbot, such as GPT or Chat. However, despite his dislike for the name, Altman reluctantly admitted that they may be stuck with it.

Altman’s remarks come amid a challenging period for him, as he was briefly fired as OpenAI’s CEO last month, leading to employee backlash and threats to resign. However, he was reinstated shortly after, with Microsoft securing a non-voting observer role on the OpenAI board.

Altman expressed his satisfaction with the company’s ability to function without his presence during his period of dismissal, stating that he had confidence in the team’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, OpenAI’s co-founder who distanced himself from the company in 2018, has also entered the AI space with his own venture, xAI. Musk has been promoting xAI’s first model, Grok, as a superior alternative to ChatGPT, aiming to make it a commonly used verb, similar to Googling for internet searches.

ChatGPT, which launched in November 2022 and quickly gained popularity, now boasts 100 million monthly active users. The chatbot’s latest version, GPT-4, has enhanced capabilities, allowing subscribers to engage in voice conversations and share images with the bot.

Despite Altman’s disapproval of the name, it seems that ChatGPT has become firmly established in the AI landscape. Altman’s comments highlight the challenges of rebranding a widely recognized product and the potential impact of a name on its public perception.

As OpenAI continues to navigate its evolving leadership and expand the capabilities of ChatGPT, industry observers will be watching closely to see how the chatbot evolves and whether any name changes might be implemented in the future.
