Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), is currently investigating an alleged sexual assault by an officer from the Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS). The SIU invoked its mandate to investigate after the allegation was reported by the TBPS on October 29th, with the assault itself alleged to have occurred on the same day. Due to the nature of the allegation, the SIU has chosen not to release any further details or information that could potentially identify the individuals involved, as per their policy.
The SIU’s role is to investigate incidents or interactions between police officers and civilians that result in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault. After the investigation is complete, SIU director Joseph Martino will determine if there is reasonable belief that a criminal offense has been committed, and if so, the officer may face charges.
In order to respect privacy and discourage under-reporting of sexual assault crimes, the SIU has chosen not to disclose any additional information regarding the case. Monica Hudon, the SIU communications coordinator, emphasized the need to protect the privacy interests of all parties involved, particularly the complainants.
As this investigation unfolds, TBnewswatch has reached out to the Thunder Bay Police Service for comment on the matter.
