When Laphonza Butler (D) was sworn in as the newest senator from California, taking the seat of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D), she became the only sitting Black female senator, just the third Black woman to serve in the Senate, and the first openly gay person to represent California in the upper chamber.

Butler, a former president of California’s largest union, played a crucial role in negotiating and passing the state’s landmark minimum wage law, receiving accolades from former President Obama for her efforts. She also has an impressive track record serving as president of EMILY’s List, which is dedicated to electing Democratic women who support abortion rights, and as a board member of BlackPAC, an organization that aims to engage Black voters.

I think that this new opportunity as a senator is about bringing the voices of those who have been left behind and whose voices have not been heard front and center. And being able to make that happen is a real point of pride and opportunity, Butler expressed in an interview with The Advocate.

Butler, a graduate of Jackson State University, a historically Black college, received widespread praise for her appointment to Congress from the Congressional Black Caucus. They believe her background and experience will bring a much-needed perspective to the Senate, which currently only has four Black members, including Butler.

Notably, Butler is one of just three openly LGBTQ sitting senators, and all three are women. With her appointment, LGBTQ representation in Congress has reached a historic level of 13 members, and for the first time ever, LGBTQ people of color have representation in both the House and the Senate.

While Butler does not intend to run for a full term in the Senate next year, she is determined to be the loudest, proudest champion of California throughout her current term.

In summary, Sen. Laphonza Butler’s appointment as California’s newest senator marks several significant milestones. As the only sitting Black female senator, she brings a unique perspective to the Senate, becoming only the third Black woman to serve in this role. Furthermore, she is the first openly gay person to represent California in the upper chamber. Butler’s accomplishments and experience garnered praise from Obama and various organizations, highlighting her dedication to advocating for marginalized communities. With her leadership, LGBTQ representation in Congress has reached an all-time high. Despite not seeking re-election, Butler remains committed to representing her constituents passionately.
