Online Dating Apps Face Government Warning Over Safety Concerns
The Australian government has issued a warning to the online dating industry, urging them to enhance their safety measures or be prepared for legislation to enforce them. The move comes after recent research conducted by the Australian Institute of Criminology revealed that three out of four users of dating apps or websites had experienced some form of sexual violence through these platforms between 2016 and 2021.
Communications minister Michelle Rowland has given dating apps, such as Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, until June 30 to create a voluntary code of conduct that addresses user safety concerns. If the safety standards are not adequately improved, the Australian government is prepared to implement regulations and legislation to ensure change.
Ms. Rowland emphasized that the aim is not to hinder innovation but to strike a balance between progress and safeguarding users. The enhanced code of conduct may involve measures such as better engagement with law enforcement, support for at-risk users, improved safety policies and practices, and increased transparency concerning the risks associated with these platforms.
Ms. Rowland added, Online dating is actually the most popular way for Australians to meet new people and form relationships. The government is concerned about the rates of sexual harassment, abusive language, unsolicited sexual images, and the violence facilitated by these platforms.
The Australian Information Industry Association, representing Australia’s IT industry but not the online dating sector, has welcomed the government’s approach, deeming it very measured. The association’s chief executive, Simon Bush, commended the government for pointing out the issues and facilitating discussions within the industry to address them before resorting to regulation.
While Bumble declined to comment, neither Tinder nor Hinge immediately responded to requests for comment on the government’s warning.
In summary, the Australian government is urging online dating apps to improve safety standards by developing a voluntary code of conduct. If these standards are not met, the government is prepared to introduce legislation to enforce change. The objective is to balance innovation with addressing concerns such as sexual violence, harassment, and abusive behavior. The move has been supported by industry representatives, who believe that collaborative efforts within the sector can bring about the necessary improvements.
