Former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton credits her neighbor with saving her life before she was diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia. Retton, who won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, revealed in an interview with ‘TODAY’ that she was hospitalized in 2023 and came close to being put on life support. Pneumonia is a respiratory infection that can be particularly severe for adults over 65, and Retton’s family did not disclose the specific type she contracted. She expressed her gratitude for being alive and described her current state as vulnerable, as she now relies on a nasal cannula to receive additional oxygen. Retton’s daughter set up a fundraiser campaign to help cover her medical expenses. Despite her health struggles, Retton remains optimistic and appreciative of her second chance at life.
