Olive Oil Consumption Reduces Dementia Risk by 28%: New Study

A new study has found that regular consumption of olive oil is associated with a 28 percent lower risk of fatal dementia. This revelation brings hope to those affected by the devastating effects of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia.

The study followed participants for 28 years and assessed their dietary habits every four years through questionnaires. The results showed that regardless of the overall quality of their diet, individuals who consumed more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day had a significantly lower risk of dying from dementia compared to those who rarely or never consumed olive oil. Furthermore, replacing a teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil was associated with an 8-14 percent lower risk.

According to the study co-author, Anne-Julie Tessier, opting for olive oil instead of fats like margarine and commercial mayonnaise offers not only heart health benefits but also potential brain health benefits. Choosing a natural product like olive oil over processed alternatives can reduce the risk of fatal dementia.

Neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter explains that olive oil targets two major threats to brain health: inflammation and free radicals. Higher levels of inflammation and exposure to damaging chemicals called free radicals contribute to the decline of brain health. Olive oil helps counteract these threats, making it a valuable addition to one’s diet. Additionally, olive oil is known to help balance blood sugar, further enhancing its positive impact on brain health.

Dr. Perlmutter recommends consuming a liter of olive oil per week, which can be achieved by incorporating liberal amounts of olive oil into various foods. Instead of focusing on cooking with olive oil, he suggests using it as a condiment or dressing. Substituting margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil can also help increase consumption. While any type of olive oil can be beneficial, extra-virgin olive oil is particularly recommended for its numerous health benefits. Choosing a USDA-certified organic product adds an additional advantage.

The study’s findings bring new hope to those concerned about dementia, as a simple dietary change can have significant effects on brain health. Olive oil offers immense potential for preventing dementia and supporting overall cognitive well-being.
