Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin seems to have found a new way to express his enthusiasm and love for Tom Petty’s music while also trolling Florida. The four-star Florida quarterback, Austin Simmons, who had committed to Florida, was flipped by Kiffin to Ole Miss on Saturday morning, prompting Kiffin to post a screenshot of Petty’s Spotify page with the songs Free Fallin,’ I Won’t Back Down, and Runnin’ Down a Dream on Twitter. Petty, a native of Gainesville, Florida, had briefly worked on the grounds crew at the University of Florida before his music career took off. Since his demise in 2017, the Gators have been playing his song I Won’t Back Down at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium towards the end of the third quarter.
Kiffin’s Twitter account, Juice Kiffin, also got a bit of a dig in at Florida, posting a photo of Lane Kiffin holding what appears to be a baby alligator and stating that his dad doesn’t need another pet because he already has him. Simmons, who was ranked as the No. 63 overall prospect in the Class of 2025, according to the 247Sports Composite, as well as the No. 4 quarterback, intends to reclassify and enroll at Ole Miss ahead of this season. While 247Sports hasn’t listed a rating for him in the 2023 class, he reportedly plans to play baseball for the Rebels. Kiffin, on the other hand, seems to be having a great time trolling Florida and expressing his love for Tom Petty’s music on Twitter.
