Bhavish Aggarwal, the co-founder and CEO of Ola, has introduced Krutrim, the first AI language model in India. Similar to Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Krutrim is a huge language model and generative AI platform developed by Aggarwal’s AI initiative, Krutrim Si Design. This made in India platform has been trained on an extensive amount of textual data, consisting of 2 trillion tokens.
Krutrim, the Sanskrit word for artificial, offers two models: the pro and base versions. The main version, like ChatGPT, can respond to public prompts and questions. It supports text generation in ten Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Gujarati, and Malayalam. Additionally, it has the capability to understand about 22 different languages. The startup plans to release a larger variant called Krutrim Pro, designed to address complex problems, between January and March.
Currently, Krutrim is accessible to selected groups of people who sign up easily. However, by January 2024, the company aims to make it available to the general public. Furthermore, starting in February 2024, developers will have access to the Krutrim APIs for experimentation and creativity.

The company claims that Krutrim outperforms OpenAI’s large language model, GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT, in Indian languages by providing faster responses with less computer power. It also performs better in English than Meta’s large language model, Llama 2.
