Fremont City Schools in Sandusky and Ottawa counties have received high ratings in the new school report cards released by the Ohio Department of Education. The district received an overall rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, showing significant improvement since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Superintendent Jon Detwiler expressed his excitement about the district’s progress, stating that they are not fully recovered from the pandemic but are getting there. The report cards also reveal improved ratings in various components, including Achievement and Progress, which both received three-star ratings. Detwiler highlighted that these ratings represent the improvement in minority groups and different demographics, marking their highest pre-pandemic achievements.
The Department of Education also noted a decrease in chronic absenteeism statewide from the previous year, although Detwiler acknowledged that it remains a challenge for Fremont City Schools. He mentioned ongoing initiatives, such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), aimed at increasing student engagement and addressing the issue.
The report cards aim to provide parents, communities, educators, and policymakers with information about district and school performance, celebrating achievements while identifying areas for improvement. The goal is to ensure that all students receive an excellent education that prepares them for success in life, careers, and future learning.
Other area districts in Sandusky and Ottawa counties also exceeded state expectations, with Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District in Oak Harbor ranking the highest with five stars.
The release of these new school report cards follows an amendment to Ohio’s accountability law by the Ohio General Assembly in 2021. It is the second school year using the star rating system to evaluate school performance.
