Persons with disabilities deserve better life, says association – Healthwise

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has emphasized the need for inclusivity and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. Suleiman Abdulazeez, the chairman of JONAPWD’s Kaduna State chapter, highlighted this during an interview on the occasion of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. The theme for this year’s observance is United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities.

Abdulazeez stressed that the objective of the association is to raise awareness about the challenges and conditions faced by people with disabilities, with the aim of educating both the public and the government. He emphasized that any assistance or support given to persons with disabilities should be seen as a right rather than a mere act of pity or goodwill. Referring to the Nigerian constitution, Abdulazeez pointed out that all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities, are entitled to the provisions and advantages that society has to offer.

He further emphasized the importance of inclusivity, highlighting the crucial role that persons with disabilities play, particularly during elections. Abdulazeez advocated for equal participation in all aspects of life, including job opportunities, skills acquisition, appointments, and political activities. He argued that persons with disabilities are an integral part of society and, therefore, deserve to live better lives with equal access to opportunities.

During the meeting, other representatives from various disability organizations raised concerns and voiced their pleas for improved conditions. Malam Ibrahim Abubakar, the chairman of the Nigerian Association for the Blind, expressed his distress over the rising prices of educational materials and essential tools like the white cane for blind students. He also highlighted the negative impact of digital literacy on visually impaired children and called for scholarships to assist them.

Similarly, Mohammed Musa, the chairman of the Association for the Deaf, highlighted the continued discrimination faced by individuals with hearing impairments. Musa stressed the need for accessible and inclusive communication devices, expressing concern over the lack of sign-language interpreters at conferences and events. He urged organizers to ensure the availability of sign language interpreters to promote effective communication and inclusivity.

Steven Waya, the Head of Gender and Social Inclusion at the Coalition of Associations for Leadership, Peace, Empowerment, and Development (CALPED), emphasized that the inclusion of persons with disabilities requires a collective effort from all stakeholders. Waya commended the collaborative efforts of the Kaduna State government, JONAPWD, and other organizations in striving for disability inclusive development. CALPED pledges to provide technical support for the disability community and advocate for stronger commitments and cooperation to fulfill the promise of leaving no one behind.

The call for inclusivity, equal opportunities, and the recognition of the rights of persons with disabilities resonates strongly with the mission of JONAPWD. As the association continues its advocacy efforts, it remains committed to raising awareness, challenging stereotypes, and striving for a society where individuals with disabilities can enjoy a better quality of life.

In a world that is constantly evolving and striving for progress, it is imperative that we work together to create a more inclusive society that recognizes and respects the rights of all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
