The collapse of the Sultanganj-Aguwani bridge in Bhagalpur district, India, has been attributed to the laxity of Bihar government officials and contractors who were responsible for overseeing its development. As a result, the Patna High Court has directed the state to file an Action Taken Report (ATR) and asked the contractor to provide a study report that focuses on various parameters related to the bridge’s development. The judge overseeing the court case has listened to a public interest petition filed by concerned citizens who believe that public interest should be safeguarded at all times and that the misuse of public funds and natural resources must be prevented.

The SP Singla construction private limited firm has been ordered to provide the study report, which should focus on technical aspects, materials used in construction and fees charged when seeking technical opinions for bridge development, among other factors. Meanwhile, the state government has been directed to provide an ATR regarding the bridge collapse. Both reports must be submitted by June 21st, which is the next date of hearing for the case.

It is worth noting that the collapse actually occurred on June 4th and that some of the bridge structure had already collapsed on April 13th of last year. The bridge is being constructed at a cost of 1,710 crore INR, which makes it clear why so many people are concerned about the situation. The IIT Roorkee has also submitted an investigation report concerning the bridge collapse.

The Patna High Court asserted that it was essential to take action in order to safeguard the public interest, prevent the misuse of public money and stop the exploitation of natural resources for the sake of the common man and society. The ruling demonstrates the need for proper oversight and due diligence in all public projects, especially those with the potential to impact so many people.
