Former Farmers Branch police officer Michael Dunn is currently on trial for the 2019 shooting death of Juan Moreno Jr., who was killed during a police sting operation involving a stolen truck. The incident, which resulted in Dunn being charged with murder, took place in a shopping center in Northwest Dallas. Dunn, who had been with the Farmers Branch Police Department for nearly 13 years, was indicted by a Dallas County grand jury two weeks after the incident and later bonded out of Seagoville Jail. Now, over four years later, Dunn is facing his murder trial, which he has elected to have heard by a judge rather than a jury.

During the trial, officers who were present at the scene testified about the operation and their knowledge of Moreno as a known truck thief. They confirmed that a tracker had been placed on the stolen white pickup truck that Moreno and two others were seen entering in surveillance footage. As Dunn approached the suspect vehicle with sirens blaring, the truck sped away, causing black smoke to rise. In a matter of seconds, Dunn fired his weapon at the vehicle, subsequently causing it to crash into other cars. Tragically, Moreno was struck by Dunn’s bullet and lost his life.

While prosecutors argue that Dunn’s actions endangered the safety of others, Dunn’s defense attorney maintains that his client believed his life was in danger and made a split-second decision to fire his weapon. The trial, which has attracted significant attention, drew a large crowd to the courtroom, including law enforcement officers and Moreno’s family.

As the trial continues, it remains to be seen how the judge will ultimately rule in this case that has raised important questions about the use of force by police officers. For now, the courtroom serves as the stage for the pursuit of justice and the determination of accountability in the tragic death of Juan Moreno Jr.
