Odisha train accident survivor recounts horror of unimaginable proportions

A fatal train accident took place in Balasore, Odisha, causing the death of 261 people and leaving over 900 injured. The accident involved three trains – Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a goods train – colliding on separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar Station. The passenger trains’ 17 coaches were thrown off the track, severely damaged, and several injured passengers were taken to hospitals. One survivor reported that her 26-year-old son died in the accident while another shared their horror after being rescued. The Indian Air Force deployed Mi-17 helicopters, and army teams assisted in the evacuation and treatment of injured citizens. A detailed high-level inquiry will be conducted to prevent such accidents in the future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and other government officials visited the site to take stock of the situation and provide healthcare and compensation to victims’ families.
