The government of Odisha has launched a welfare scheme for vehicle drivers and workers, which is expected to benefit over five lakh individuals. Under the scheme, the next of kin of motor vehicle drivers and workers will receive Rs four lakh in case of death in an accident, and Rs 2 lakh in ordinary deaths. Furthermore, if a driver sustains permanent disability, they will receive Rs.1,50,000, while severe injuries will qualify for Rs.80,000.

The scheme was launched after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gave his approval, and a proposal to form a welfare board to implement the scheme was submitted. The board will feature representatives from the government, drivers, and workers. Initially, the government will fund the board, but it will eventually be operated by collecting registration fees, contributions from vehicle owners, and other sources.

Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu launched the scheme, stating that it will provide much-needed support to drivers and workers in the state. He said that such a scheme had been discussed for some time, and its approval was a significant achievement for those who will be directly impacted. With the welfare scheme’s implementation, drivers and workers in Odisha will have valuable protection and assistance when they most need it.

The government’s scheme is expected to ease the financial burden drivers and workers could be subject to in cases of accident or death and offer crucial support to their families. The transport minister also emphasized that the state government remains committed to improving the welfare of drivers and workers in all areas. In conclusion, the scheme’s launch is set to have a positive impact on the lives of over five lakh drivers and workers in Odisha.
