Odisha HR Commission Orders Inquiry into Alleged Torture of Woman Home Guard by IPS Officer’s Wife

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has launched an inquiry into the alleged torture of a woman Home Guard by the wife of an IPS officer in the state. The incident came to light after the victim lodged a written complaint with the Director General of Home Guard, accusing the senior officer’s wife of verbal abuse and physical assault whenever she failed to meet the expectations of her job.

Taking note of media reports on the matter, the OHRC has sought an inquiry report from the Director General of Police, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. According to a statement from the Commission, a lady Home Guard who was stationed at the residence of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) suffered torture and humiliation to such an extent that she attempted suicide by lying on railway tracks. Although her life was saved, she lost both her legs in the incident, and she is currently in a serious condition receiving treatment at a hospital.

Expressing grave concern over the matter, the OHRC, in an official order, has directed the DGP to submit the inquiry report by September 15. Due to the unavailability of a Division Bench, the Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and emphasized the significance of a prompt and thorough investigation into the allegations.

The victim’s written complaint to the DG Home Guard on August 13 detailed the verbal abuse and physical assaults she endured at the hands of the senior officer’s wife. The alleged torture drove her to attempt suicide, resulting in the loss of both her legs when she was run over by a moving train.

Currently, the victim is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack.

The OHRC’s intervention and call for an inquiry demonstrate the importance of addressing allegations of human rights abuses promptly and thoroughly. It is essential to protect the rights and dignity of individuals, irrespective of their profession or background. The inquiry report, expected to be submitted on September 15, will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged torture and will be crucial in holding the culprits accountable.

As this investigation unfolds, it is hoped that justice will be served, and steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The findings of the inquiry will provide an opportunity to reassess existing safeguards and ensure the safety and wellbeing of those entrusted with maintaining law and order in our society.
