The Odisha government has been hailed as a model for disaster management after saving the lives of more than 1,200 people in the aftermath of a triple train accident. Despite 288 fatalities, officials said the death toll could have been much higher if the authorities had not responded so swiftly. Officials including Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena and Development Commissioner Anu Garg rushed to the state emergency control room to prepare an action plan, while Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahu organised resources including ambulances, doctors and facilities at the accident site. A supply chain and management structure was established immediately and all required resources were deployed to the spot.
