The Odisha government and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have joined forces to establish the Biju Patnaik Special Centre for Odia Studies. With a significant financial contribution of Rs 10 crore from the state government, the center aims to explore the accomplishments of Biju Patnaik, the visionary leader of India and former Chief Minister of Odisha. The initiative includes the launch of a master’s program in Odia Studies, strengthening cultural connections with the Odisha Diaspora, and promoting contemporary Odia literature and art.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Odisha government and JNU was signed in the presence of prominent officials, including Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, the Minister of Higher Education, and Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena. The MoU signifies the commitment of both parties to advance the study of Odia language and literature, as well as to explore the historical maritime connections between the Kalinga Empire and Southeast Asia.
Arabind Agrawal, Commissioner-Secretary of the Higher Education Department of Odisha, and Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit from JNU were the signatories of the MoU. The specialized center will focus on international teaching and research in Odia language and literature, studying diasporic ties, investigating the historical links of the Kalinga Empire, and promoting contemporary Odia culture through publications and collaborative research.
Officials from the Higher Education Department of Odisha, along with Professor Udaynath Sahu from the Adikabi Sarala Das Chair at JNU, attended the signing ceremony.
