Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Inaugurates Malkangiri Airport
Malkangiri (Odisha) [India], January 9 – Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the new Malkangiri Airport on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone for the district’s connectivity.
The airport, constructed on 233 acres of land at a cost of Rs 70 crore, is expected to boost transportation services in Malkangiri. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that Patnaik also gave his approval for the Govindapally Irrigation Project, aimed at providing irrigation to 92,815 acres of farmland.
According to official sources, the airport’s runway stretches over 1,602 meters and is 30 meters wide, with a total cost of approximately Rs 29 crore. Built on 106 acres of land, the airport is capable of handling small aircraft, similar to the existing airport in Koraput.
The successful trial run of a nine-seater VT-100 double-engine flight was conducted at the Malkangiri airport on January 7.
In addition to the airport inauguration, the Chief Minister received the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Satpadhara Irrigation Project. The project, set to commence in April, is expected to benefit around 37,000 hectares of land.
Minister Tukuni Sahu highlighted the positive impact these developments will have on the region. Malkangiri district was in need of better transport systems, and with the inauguration of the airport following the launch of bus services, the region will experience increased connectivity. The airport, combined with the irrigation project, will greatly benefit the people of Malkangiri, said Sahu.
Plans for flight services from Malkangiri airport are already underway and scheduled to begin soon.
