New Zealand Landmarks Illuminate in Support of Paramedics on International Paramedics Day

Major New Zealand landmarks are set to shine bright in honor of the country’s paramedics and first responders on International Paramedics Day, which falls on Saturday, July 8th. This nationwide tribute, organized by the College of Paramedics in the United Kingdom, aims to highlight the incredible work done by these frontline workers and showcase the diversity within the field of paramedicine and pre-hospital emergency care.

To mark this special occasion, several iconic New Zealand landmarks will be illuminated in yellow and green, the colors of the country’s ambulances. Auckland’s Sky Tower and Harbour Bridge, as well as Christchurch’s New Brighton Pier, Bridge of Remembrance, Bowker Fountain in Victoria Square, and the Fanfare sculpture on State Highway 1, will all light up in support of these lifesaving individuals.

Last year alone, Hato Hone St John and Wellington Free Ambulance, two of New Zealand’s major emergency ambulance services, responded to over 472,000 incidents nationwide. Combined, these organizations have nearly 4,000 ambulance officers serving communities across the country. Their dedicated and relentless efforts have made a significant impact, particularly during severe weather events and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Peter Bradley, Chief Executive of Hato Hone St John, expressed his gratitude for the ambulance staff, emphasizing their invaluable contributions to the increasingly demanding healthcare sector. The introduction of paramedic registration in 2021, the double-crewing of emergency ambulances, and the addition of extended care paramedics have paved the way for improved patient outcomes, reflecting the continuous progress made within the profession.

Dave Robinson, Chief Executive of Wellington Free Ambulance, also stressed the importance of recognizing the dedication and sacrifices made by these frontline workers. He commended their courage, resilience, and expert clinical care, highlighting the profound impact they have on communities. Their commitment to saving and changing lives every day is a true testament to their compassion and professionalism.

International Paramedics Day serves as a reminder of the pivotal role paramedics play in providing emergency medical care. Alana Murphy, a paramedic stationed in Motueka, near Nelson, since March this year, shared her journey from being a first responder to qualifying as an emergency medical technician and becoming a paramedic. She disclosed that the biggest challenge in her career has been developing self-confidence and trusting her own decisions. Despite the constant unpredictability of her job, she finds fulfillment in knowing that she can make a real difference in someone’s life.

Tor, an intensive care paramedic with Wellington Free Ambulance for 42 years, reflected on the significant changes he has witnessed within the profession. He recalled the initial challenges of making life-or-death decisions without the advanced equipment, manpower, and pharmacological knowledge available today. Paramedics now possess a wealth of knowledge in pharmacology, anatomy, and physiology, which has greatly improved patient care and the ability to make informed decisions.

Together, Hato Hone St John and Wellington Free Ambulance join their ambulance colleagues in Australasia in expressing gratitude to all ambulance officers. Their unwavering dedication, expertise, and continuous advancements in the field ensure that people in need receive the best care possible in critical situations.

As International Paramedics Day approaches, let us acknowledge and appreciate the exceptional work done by paramedics and first responders worldwide. Their selflessness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to saving lives are truly remarkable.
