A suspect accused of slashing three NYPD cops with a machete has been charged with attempted murder, police said Tuesday.
Jean Blain, 40, was also charged with assault, menacing, and weapon possession.
Police responded to a call at Blain’s New York Ave. apartment near Beverly Road in East Flatbush around 3:20 p.m. on Monday due to reports of his erratic behavior.
After initially speaking with Blain’s family, officers attempted to arrest him, but he launched a sudden attack.
Blain allegedly slashed one officer’s head before turning on other officers, injuring one on the wrist and another on the shoulder.
All three officers were promptly transported to Kings County Hospital and are expected to recover from their injuries.
The bravery and resilience displayed by these officers during this harrowing incident is a true testament to their dedication to protecting the community, said NYPD spokesperson, Sgt. Olivia Martinez.
The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of law enforcement officers who continually face dangerous situations while serving and protecting the public.
We’re reminded once again of the risks our officers face every day as they selflessly carry out their duties, stated City Council member, Lisa Adams. We must remain steadfast in our support for our law enforcement and ensure they have the resources they need to keep our communities safe.
The motive behind Blain’s attack remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing. Police are working collaboratively with the district attorney’s office to build a strong case against the suspect.
Residents of the East Flatbush neighborhood expressed shock and concern following the incident.
I’ve lived here for years, and this is the first time something like this has happened, said local resident, Marcus Johnson. It’s really scary to think that something so violent could occur right in our backyard.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by police officers on a daily basis, and the need for continued support and resources to ensure their safety while carrying out their duties.
Law enforcement agencies have been grappling with an increase in violent incidents against officers, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced measures to safeguard those who risk their lives protecting their communities.
The accused, Jean Blain, is currently in police custody and is expected to face a court arraignment soon.
As investigations continue, the NYPD is working diligently to provide a safe and secure environment for all New Yorkers and to bring those responsible for such acts of violence to justice.
