Todd Scott Denied Parole in Infamous NYPD Officer Edward Byrne Murder
Todd Scott, the man convicted for his role in the notorious drug-related killing of New York City rookie police officer Edward Byrne, has been denied parole. Scott, currently serving 25 years to life at Shawangunk Correctional Facility for the 1988 murder, had his parole denied following a recent appearance before the state board.
Officer Edward Byrne was shot five times inside his patrol car while guarding the home of a witness in a drug case in Queens. The killing, part of a drug-related retaliation, sent shockwaves through the city during the height of the crack cocaine epidemic. Scott was part of a four-man crew and was paid $8,000 to carry out the assassination in retaliation for the arrest of drug dealer Howard Pappy Mason.
Scott’s parole eligibility dates back to 2013, but it wasn’t until January 23rd that he appeared before the state board of parole. The decision to deny his release was met with relief by the Byrne family and the NYPD. The New York City Police Department also holds an annual ceremony at the intersection where Officer Byrne was killed to commemorate his sacrifice.
Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, expressed relief over the parole denial, stating, Keeping Todd Scott behind bars ensures justice for Officer Edward Byrne and sends a clear message that there will be no redemption for those who kill police officers. The union plans to oppose the release of two others convicted in the killing, David McClary and Phillip Copeland, who are scheduled to appear before the parole board in the coming months.
Kenneth Byrne, the slain officer’s brother, emphasized the importance of honoring his brother’s sacrifice and rejecting any possibility of redemption for those who harm law enforcement officers. They tried to make an example of Eddie, sending a message to the police and the public that they ruled the streets. It’s very comforting to know that message wasn’t reinforced this time around, said Byrne.
The denial of parole for Todd Scott not only provides relief to the Byrne family and the NYPD but also reaffirms the commitment to ensuring justice for the lives of law enforcement officers. This decision sends a powerful message that the sacrifices made by officers like Edward Byrne will never be forgotten.
The NYPD and the Byrne family appreciate the ongoing support from the community, highlighting the importance of remembering and honoring the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect and serve. The denial of parole for Todd Scott further solidifies the commitment to holding accountable those who carry out violent acts against law enforcement officers and reinforces the idea that their sacrifices will never be in vain.
