NVIDIA RTX 40 Super leaks show we’re getting more expensive graphics cards you probably don’t need
The highly anticipated RTX 40 Super series is set to expand with three new models, as reported by Videocardz. NVIDIA, the leading GPU manufacturer, is expected to unveil its first Super cards during the CES event in January 2024. Leaked information suggests that the cheapest variant, the RTX 4070 Super, will be available for purchase on January 17, with all three models hitting the market by the end of the month.
It’s quite audacious for NVIDIA to release these pricey graphics cards right after the holiday season when many consumers are recovering from their holiday shopping sprees. Yet, this is just another example of big companies vying for your hard-earned money.
Although there is an undeniable allure to owning these cutting-edge GPUs, one can argue that most gamers don’t actually need them. Yes, some PC games are becoming more demanding, but let’s face it—the current RTX 4070, 4070 Ti, and 4080 cards are already incredibly powerful. In fact, they exceed the requirements of most gamers, considering their exorbitant price tags. At present, an RTX 4070 is priced at a minimum of $550, whereas I recall purchasing the top-tier GTX 1080 Ti for a similar amount. Will the RTX 4070 Super match this price point? It remains to be seen.
The incessant feeling that PC gamers always need more is pervasive among the community, despite the truth being quite the opposite. In fact, data indicates that higher-end graphics cards aren’t flying off the shelves either. Steam’s most popular card currently is the RTX 3060, with the highest-ranked 40 Series card, the RTX 4060, languishing in 11th place.
Personally, one of the reasons I’m backing Intel with my own money is their effort to disrupt the market and offer reasonably priced options for enjoying PC gaming. Considering the constant increase in the cost of living, the fact that most gamers already have more than they need, and the recent holiday expenditures, I’m confident in saying that only the most die-hard enthusiasts should rush out to purchase these new graphics cards.
However, for everyone else, there may be a silver lining in the form of attractive discounts on the previous generation of graphics cards that the Super series will surpass. Although as a journalist, it’s my duty to stay excited about such developments, this particular release doesn’t quite spark my enthusiasm. And I’m not sure it should ignite yours either.
