A Pennsylvania nurse, Heather Pressdee, has been charged with homicide in 17 deaths after allegedly administering lethal doses of insulin to multiple patients. The 41-year-old nurse was arraigned on two new homicide charges, in addition to the previous accusations of killing two nursing home patients and injuring another. Pressdee later confessed to attempting to murder 19 patients.

Pressdee’s defense attorney, James DePasquale, acknowledged that the fresh charges were not unexpected and stated that they are working to avoid the death penalty. The latest allegations involve the mistreatment of 19 more patients across five different care facilities since 2020.

The nurse faces a total of 17 counts of attempted murder, 19 counts of abuse of a care-dependent person, and two counts of first-degree murder. Pressdee, a resident of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, is accused of administering excessive insulin doses to patients, regardless of whether they were diabetic or not.

Attorney General Michelle Henry described the allegations against Pressdee as deeply disturbing, questioning how a trusted nurse could intentionally harm her patients. Henry stated that 17 patients ranging from 43 to 104 years old have died as a result of Pressdee’s actions. Following the initial allegations, the nurse’s license was suspended.

Pressdee worked as a registered nurse at various facilities, including Concordia at Rebecca Residence, Belair Healthcare and Rehabilitation, Quality Life Services Chicora, Premier Armstrong Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, and Sunnyview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Court documents revealed that Pressdee had sent text messages to her mother between April 2022 and May of this year expressing dissatisfaction with patients and colleagues, even discussing the possibility of killing them. She also complained about people she encountered outside of healthcare facilities, such as in restaurants and other public locations.

The documents also outlined a history of disciplinary action against Pressdee for abusive behavior towards patients and staff, resulting in resignations or terminations at each facility.

Currently, Pressdee is being held without bail at the Butler County jail.

As the investigation continues, it is crucial to ensure that justice is served and that the victims and their families receive the support they need during this difficult time. Authorities are working diligently to gather all the necessary evidence and bring the case to a fair resolution.

It is a tragic and shocking incident that raises concerns about patient safety and the role of healthcare professionals. The case highlights the importance of stringent protocols and monitoring within healthcare facilities to prevent such devastating incidents from occurring.

The allegations against Pressdee remind us of the need for rigorous background checks and regular evaluations of healthcare practitioners to identify any potential red flags or past disciplinary actions.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information related to this case to come forward to assist in the investigation and ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the deaths and injuries.

Patient safety remains a top priority within the healthcare industry, and incidents like these must prompt a comprehensive review of existing protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The well-being and trust of patients should always be the paramount concern of healthcare professionals.
