Uruguay’s migrant population grows for first time in a century

MONTEVIDEO, Dec 21 – Uruguay is experiencing a significant increase in its foreign-born population for the first time since mass European migration to the Americas in the early 1900s. The rise is primarily driven by arrivals from Venezuela and Cuba, as political and economic turmoil in these countries has prompted an exodus to South America and beyond.

According to the country’s latest census data, foreign-born residents now make up 3% of Uruguay’s total population of 3.4 million, up from 2% a decade ago. This represents the first increase in foreign-born residents since 1908, marking a significant demographic shift for the country.

The allure of Uruguay can be attributed to several factors. Migrants cite the country’s relative economic stability, higher wages, job security, and a highly regarded public education system as key reasons for choosing to settle there. However, it is important to note that the cost of living in Uruguay is relatively high.

One example of the growing migrant community’s integration is the annual Venezuelan community Christmas party held in the capital city of Montevideo. This year, a record number of small gifts were wrapped by volunteers to distribute to children. The event attracted 4,000 attendees who enjoyed live bands, bouncy castles, and traditional dishes. Vanessa Sarmiento, one of the event organizers, stated that there are no signs of the numbers falling, indicating a sustained growth in the migrant population.

To help migrants settle in Uruguay, non-profit organizations like Manos Veneguayas have been established. Manos Veneguayas supports Venezuelan migrants and has played a pivotal role in facilitating their integration into Uruguayan society. The efforts of such organizations have contributed to the significant increase in the Venezuelan community, which has tripled in size over the past five years, reaching a total of 33,000 individuals. Additionally, nearly 30,000 Cubans have arrived in Uruguay over the same period, although many view the country as a stepping stone to reach the United States and Europe.

Unlike in other South American countries where rising migrant populations are sometimes seen as burdens on public services, Uruguay perceives this trend as a huge positive. Martin Koolhaas, a demographic specialist, explains that the influx of migrants helps address the long-standing issue of Uruguay having the lowest birth rate in South America.

Uruguay’s immigration system has been praised as exemplary by Vanessa Sarmiento and other migrants. The process of obtaining documents and finding work is perceived as efficient and accessible. For example, 55-year-old Luiz Paz successfully settled in Uruguay within three months, following his eldest daughter to Montevideo. Paz expresses contentment with the rights granted to migrants in Uruguay, emphasizing that they are treated on par with Uruguayan citizens.

The growing migrant population in Uruguay is expected to continue its upward trajectory, driven by the country’s stability and favorable living conditions. With its exemplary immigration system, Uruguay has become an attractive destination for migrants seeking a fresh start. As the nation embraces its evolving demographic landscape, it is poised to reap the benefits of increased cultural diversity and contribute to its population growth.
