NRL Star Payne Haas’s Mother Moved to New Jail After Clashing with Inmates
Joan Taufua, the mother of NRL star Payne Haas, has been transferred to another jail following reports of altercations with fellow inmates at her previous prison. Taufua is currently on remand and facing charges related to a fatal car crash that occurred in December, claiming the lives of three people on the Gold Coast.
According to the Courier Mail, Taufua has been relocated from the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre to Brisbane Women’s prison. The move comes after an assault incident at the Spring Creek correctional centre on May 31, which is currently being investigated by the Corrective Services Investigation Unit.
The altercation reportedly took place between Taufua and another female prisoner while they were waiting in line to use the phone. As a result, Taufua was placed in a detention cell, which offers limited amenities such as no access to TV or radio.
The Queensland Corrective Services spokesperson stated that the matter is now in the hands of the Queensland Police Service, as investigations into the assault continue. Taufua is facing three counts of manslaughter in connection with the car crash in December, in which her black Mercedes wagon collided head-on with another vehicle and a power pole.
The crash resulted in the death of three individuals: Chris Fawcett, 79, his partner Susan Zimmer, 70, and Zimmer’s 35-year-old daughter Stephanie. Police allege that Taufua was driving erratically shortly before the crash and attempted to flee from a patrol car that was trying to pull her over.
In addition to the manslaughter charges, Taufua has been accused of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police, unlicensed driving, and mid-range drink driving.
The news of Taufua’s situation has deeply affected her son, Payne Haas, who plays for the Brisbane Broncos. Haas admitted to struggling with his mother’s charges and incarceration, stating that it has been incredibly tough. However, he expressed gratitude for the support he receives from his partner Leilani and their daughter Lalita.
Haas, known for his success in the NRL, described himself as a mummy’s boy and emphasized the strong bond he shares with his mother.
It remains to be seen how Taufua’s case will unfold as she faces the legal consequences of her alleged involvement in the fatal car crash. The investigation into the assault at the correctional centre adds another layer of complexity to her situation. As the proceedings continue, Haas and his family will undoubtedly endure challenging times, relying on their support network to navigate these difficult circumstances.
