Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and BJP leader Raghubar Das has announced that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented in the state if the saffron party is voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls. Das claimed to have written to the Centre in 2018 for the implementation of the NRC due to the fast-changing demography of tribal-dominated Santal Paragana region, particularly in Parkur and Sahebgunj districts. The infiltration of Bangladeshis has become a threat to the region, and these illegal migrants from the neighbouring country have married local women and acquired thousands of acres of land in the area, he alleged.
The Hemant Soren government has not taken any action to address the issue of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, even though the tribal population in the area has been under threat, Das added. He also accused the current JMM-led government in the state of patronising infiltrators for vote-bank purposes.
The issue of the rapidly changing demography in the Santal Paragana region has been raised in Parliament earlier, he noted. Das elaborated that the NRC will be implemented if the BJP is elected to power in the 2024 state elections. He confirmed that the BJP has already started preparing for the party’s victory in all 14 parliamentary constituencies in the state during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. In the 2019 elections, the saffron party had won 12 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats while one seat each went to the Congress and the JMM.
Regarding opposition parties’ meeting in Patna on Friday, Das stated: It is an alliance of thugs. Differences within the opposition were clearly visible during the meeting, and people of the country are also aware of their intentions and motives. JMM leaders could not be contacted for their comments.
Das’ announcement has sparked widespread debate, with some supporting his move, while others are criticising him for polarising the state on religious lines. It remains to be seen how the Jharkhand assembly polls will unfold as the BJP seeks to return to power in the state.
