Pyniaid Sing Syiem of the National People’s Party has been elected as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). He was elected uncontested as the Opposition decided not to contest the election. The KHADC Chairman, Lamphrang Blah, formally announced the decision. Syiem, who previously served as the Council Chairman, will now lead the new Executive Committee of the NPP-led Khasi Hills Democratic Front. The alliance also has the support of the six Congress MDCs.
The election comes after the Executive Committee of the United Democratic Alliance (UDF) led by CEM Titossarwell Chyne lost a no-confidence motion moved by the NPP’s Bajop Pyngrope on the first day of the summer session. Pyngrope had questioned Chyne’s leadership style.
