Novel Method Overcomes Oxygen Sensitivity in Gut Bacteria, Boosting Health Potential

Researchers at the MetaboGen – subsidiary of BioGaia – and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have made a breakthrough in the field of gut health. They have developed a novel method to overcome the oxygen sensitivity of beneficial resident bacteria in the gut, opening up new possibilities for promoting health. The team has patented this method, and the results of their study have been published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature.

One of the key findings of the study is the significant reduction of beneficial resident and anti-inflammatory bacteria, such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, in individuals suffering from metabolic conditions and cardiovascular disease. This makes it even more crucial to find ways to preserve and enhance these bacteria’s presence in the gut.

The researchers achieved their groundbreaking results by training the oxygen-sensitive bacteria to isolate more aerotolerant Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. This process involved creating a cooperative relationship between the oxygen-sensitive bacteria and Desulfovibrio piger, a sulfate-reducing bacterium with unique beneficial effects on Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. The two bacteria exchanged metabolites, which ultimately resulted in the production of butyrate, a substance with multiple positive effects on the gut.

Butyrate has been shown to reduce metabolic disease and improve the intestinal cells’ health and the gut barrier. Identifying specific resident bacteria that produce butyrate or other beneficial substances can lead to improved health outcomes for individuals.

The trained bacteria developed through this method have been deemed safe for human consumption. BioGaia, in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg, is now working on investigating whether intervention with this product can improve blood sugar control in patients with prediabetes.

While the study presents significant findings, the researchers acknowledge that there are still limitations to their work. They have not explored transient or personalized gut microbiota responses to the administered formulation due to limited longitudinal data. Additionally, they have not been able to determine the molecular mechanisms responsible for the increased oxygen tolerance in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Despite these limitations, the researchers are optimistic about the potential for their method to increase butyrate production and improve gut health.

This breakthrough in gut health research comes at a time when scientists are increasingly recognizing the essential role of the gut microbiota in digestion, immune health, and overall well-being. Recent studies have explored the connection between gut health and various conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and Crohn’s disease.

The progress made by the MetaboGen research team and the University of Gothenburg contributes to the growing body of knowledge surrounding the gut microbiota and its impact on human health. Their novel method of training bacteria to tolerate oxygen could pave the way for the development of next-generation probiotics that can effectively replace missing bacteria in individuals at risk of diseases.

This groundbreaking research opens up new possibilities for improving gut health and holds promise for individuals with metabolic conditions and cardiovascular disease. By unlocking the potential of oxygen-sensitive bacteria and harnessing their beneficial properties, researchers are one step closer to developing innovative solutions that enhance human health and well-being.
