The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is urging at-risk residents to get vaccinated against MPOX as the number of cases continues to rise. Two new cases have been confirmed in the past six weeks, highlighting the need for increased vaccinations. Dr. Zack Moore, state epidemiologist, emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated, especially for those at higher risk. He stated that although cases have been relatively low thanks to previous vaccinations, it is crucial to remember that MPOX is still a threat. The recent cases in North Carolina mark the first since April 2023. Since the outbreak began in 2022, there have been a total of 711 confirmed cases in the state. Alarmingly, the MPOX virus has been detected in one out of 12 wastewater sites where monitoring is conducted. This suggests that there is an increased spread of MPOX in North Carolina. While MPOX can affect anyone, the current outbreak has predominantly affected men who have sex with men. Furthermore, more than half of the cases in North Carolina have been reported in individuals living with HIV. Typically, MPOX starts with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and exhaustion. This is followed by a rash that may appear on various parts of the body. In some cases, the rash may precede or occur simultaneously with the flu-like symptoms. The virus can be spread from the onset of symptoms until all sores have healed, which can take several weeks. It is worth noting that individuals who are immunocompromised, such as those living with HIV, may experience more severe symptoms. Health officials have highlighted that MPOX spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, contact with an infectious rash, body fluids, or respiratory secretions. Transmission often occurs during prolonged face-to-face contact or intimate physical contact such as kissing, cuddling, or sexual activity. In light of the recent cases, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC have provided recommendations to protect oneself from MPOX. These include getting vaccinated, using the MPOX vaccine locator to find nearby healthcare providers, taking precautions during sexual activity or social gatherings, avoiding close contact with individuals displaying MPOX-like rashes, and maintaining good hand hygiene. It is crucial for individuals who suspect they may have been exposed to MPOX or have close contact with someone who has MPOX to seek medical attention and consult with a healthcare provider or local health department. Testing for MPOX and other sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and syphilis, is strongly recommended. The MPOX outbreak in North Carolina serves as a reminder of the importance of timely vaccinations, especially for those at higher risk. By staying vigilant and following the recommended precautions, individuals can protect themselves and prevent further transmission of the virus.
