Several nonprofits in Oklahoma County have received a significant boost in funding to aid in pandemic relief efforts. The federal government has extended several million dollars in pandemic relief aid to the county, with a portion of the funds specifically allocated to support nonprofits and small businesses.

In total, Oklahoma County was awarded $154 million to address pandemic recovery needs, enhance quality of life, and invest in building more resilient communities. Out of this amount, $4.9 million was set aside to assist nonprofits and small businesses across the county’s three districts.

District 1 Commissioner Carrie Blumert recently announced the allocation of $1,633,000 to various organizations. The funds will support initiatives focused on community health, mental health, affordable housing, food insecurity, and diversion programs for individuals in the justice system. Blumert expressed her passion for these issues, particularly in light of the heightened need created by the pandemic.

Among the nonprofits selected as recipients of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding in District 1 are RestoreOKC’s Culture of Health program, the Urban League’s OKC Minority Business Assistance program, NE OKC Renaissance’s PlaceKeepers real estate development training initiative, ReMerge’s diversion program, Community Health Centers of Oklahoma’s Highland Park Family Medical Center, City Care’s supportive services for those transitioning out of homelessness, CARE Center’s victim services project, Allied Arts, and the Regional Food Bank’s Nourishing Oklahoma County program.

District 2 Commissioner Brian Maughan also named several nonprofits and small businesses that will receive ARPA funds. These include Allied Arts of Oklahoma, American Indian Cultural Center Foundation, the city of Bethany, Community Health Center, Dale Rogers Training Center, HOPE Community Services, New Day Recovery Youth and Family Services, Oklahoma Railway Museum, Oklahoma State Fair, and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

The submission portal for ARPA funds received over 130 requests from local nonprofits and small businesses, totaling more than $81 million. The county reviewed these proposals for eligibility and impact in collaboration with a consultant.

ARPA funds were provided to local governments to address public health and economic needs arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. In February 2023, officials opened the call for community-based project proposals, resulting in over 140 submissions.

The allocation of these funds aims to provide immediate relief and support for nonprofits and small businesses that have been affected by the ongoing pandemic. The funds will help these organizations continue their vital work in serving the community and improving the lives of residents.

Commissioners Blumert and Maughan expressed their enthusiasm for the positive and sustainable impact these organizations will have in Oklahoma County. Both commissioners remain committed to securing future funding for additional community awards in the coming months.

The support from the federal government will undoubtedly strengthen the nonprofit sector in Oklahoma County and contribute to the post-pandemic recovery efforts. As these organizations continue their essential work, the community can look forward to improved access to healthcare, affordable housing, food security, and other vital services.

The awarded nonprofits and small businesses are now equipped to address the ongoing challenges resulting from the pandemic, ensuring the county’s residents receive the support they need during these trying times. The generosity of the federal government’s relief aid will have a lasting impact on the well-being and resilience of Oklahoma County and its communities.
