Merging the Art of Music with the Power of Connection

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Vincent James and Joann Pierdomenico, the founders of the nonprofit Keep Music Alive, firmly believe that it is never too early or too late to learn to play a musical instrument. With this philosophy in mind, they embarked on their mission to help individuals of all ages experience the educational, therapeutic, and social benefits of music. Nearly a decade later, James and Pierdomenico continue to take their musical minivan on the road, bringing over 50 instruments, including spring drums, ukuleles, and their signature melodic amphibian, Freddy the Frog, to schools, libraries, and festivals.

Playing an instrument engages both sides of the brain simultaneously, making it one of the few activities that bridge the generational gap. Keep Music Alive actively celebrates events like Teach Music Week and Kids Music Day, inspiring individuals to explore their musical talents. Tucker Weiss, an 11-year-old singer-songwriter and Kid Ambassador for the organization, shares his personal connection to music, describing it as an escape. Pierdomenico can relate, as music played a significant role in her life as well. Growing up half Asian and facing discrimination in her neighborhood, as well as dealing with her mother’s schizophrenia, music became her solace.

While Keep Music Alive is dedicated to promoting the joy of making music, the organization also emphasizes the importance of fostering meaningful connections. By providing individuals with the opportunity to engage in music, they create a common ground for people from diverse backgrounds to connect and find solace in the universal language of melodies.

In a world that often feels divided, music has the power to bring people together, building bridges between generations, cultures, and experiences. The founders of Keep Music Alive understand this deeply and tirelessly work to make music accessible to all. Whether it’s a child learning their first chords or an adult rediscovering the joy of playing an instrument, Keep Music Alive is there to support, inspire, and create a lasting impact through music.

As the minivan continues to hit the road, Keep Music Alive’s message resonates more than ever. The power of music extends beyond the individual notes and melodies; it transcends barriers, unites communities, and provides solace during challenging times. With their unwavering dedication, Vincent James and Joann Pierdomenico are ensuring that music remains a source of inspiration and connection for generations to come. Keep Music Alive is not just keeping music alive; it is keeping the spirit of connection alive through the beautiful symphony of melodies that bring people together.
