Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has recently come out against the proposal of building a new parliament building. According to Kumar, there is no real need for a new parliament building as the existing one is already a symbol of India’s glorious history. He even compared the current situation to the one in Bihar, where an existing Legislative building was extended with new construction in order to accommodate more space.
Additionally, Nitish Kumar had previously voiced his opposition against the building of a new parliament and alleged that the Narendra Modi Government was trying to change the nation’s history.
The Chief Minister also recalled the time when the BJP was a coalition partner of the government, questioning why they did not raise the issue or suggest to the government to invite the Governor for the inauguration of the extended building of the state legislature.
Apart from that, Nitish Kumar also spoke about his attendance of the Niti Aayog meeting. He shared that he was preoccupied with other engagements and had shared with the Centre much earlier about his inability to attend the meeting. He mentioned that the meeting could have been scheduled in the afternoon instead and expressed his disappointment at the Centre’s lack of response to Bihar’s multiple requests for special status.
Narendra Modi’s Government has been in power for almost seven years, and in that time, they have shown to be open to state requests and construction projects. While Nitish Kumar brings up a justified point against the building of a new parliament building, the question remains if the current one is sufficient enough to hold the nation’s history or if a new one would be necessary.
Nitish Kumar is an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from 2017 to 2020.
