No mass drill or weapons training at Sarkara Devi Temple, orders Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court has issued an order prohibiting the conduct of mass drill or weapons training at the premises of Sarkara Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This decision came as the court disposed of a petition filed by two devotees who sought to prevent the illegal use of the temple premises by members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organization. The temple is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).

In its ruling, the court directed the police to ensure strict adherence to an earlier TDB order that prohibited RSS branches, known as shakhas, and mass drills at temples under their jurisdiction. The court emphasized that the TDB is responsible for managing the properties and affairs of the Sarkara Devi Temple, including the organization of daily worship, ceremonies, and festivals in accordance with established practices.

The Temple Advisory Committee of Sree Sarkara Devi Temple, comprising eligible devotees as specified in the relevant rules, must provide the necessary assistance to the TDB and its officials to ensure the smooth functioning of temple activities and festivals, the court stated.

It is worth noting that this decision by the Kerala High Court arises from concerns expressed by devotees about the use of the temple premises by the RSS and its members for purposes such as training activities involving weapons. The court’s ruling aims to uphold the sanctity and religious significance of the temple while preventing any unlawful activities from taking place within its premises.

Lead exposure could be linked to a loss of IQ in children under the age of five, and a recent study published in the Lancet suggests that this could potentially result in 5.5 million deaths from cardiovascular diseases in adults.

In conclusion, the Kerala High Court has taken necessary steps to ensure that the Sarkara Devi Temple remains a sacred place of worship, free from any activities that could compromise its sanctity. By ordering the prohibition of mass drill and weapons training at the temple premises, the court has upheld the rights of devotees to worship in a peaceful and serene environment. It is crucial to respect and preserve the religious importance of such places to maintain harmony in society.
