NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering student Preeyaj Safary has developed an innovative AI model that translates sign language into text, enhancing communication for individuals with hearing and speech impairments. The 19-year-old Safary developed the technology after witnessing the challenges experienced by hearing and speech-impaired individuals in communicating with the outside world. The model relies on AI to bridge the communication gap, which captures sign language gestures through a camera, compares them to an extensive database, and then accurately translates the gestures into written text displayed on a screen.

Apart from providing the words corresponding to the signs, the technology also indicates the accuracy level of the translation, ensuring effective communication. Safary gathered a diverse range of sign language images, including online platforms and interactions with individuals from NGOs working in that field, to expand the AI model’s database. The increased usage of the technology further contributed to enhancing the database’s accuracy and completeness.

Safary previously developed another program to assist elderly individuals in booking vaccination slots during the COVID-19 pandemic. His tireless efforts to address societal needs through innovative technological solutions reflect his commitment to leveraging tech for the betterment of society. MPSTME Mumbai’s nurturing environment and dedicated faculty played a crucial role in Safary’s achievement, enabling students to thrive and contribute to society.

As Safary’s story exemplifies the transformative power of technology and innovation, MPSTME remains committed to nurturing its students’ talents and providing the necessary tools and support to create a better world. Safary envisions a future where technology continues to drive positive social change, exploring new technologies and identifying innovative use cases that address pressing societal needs.
