The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) board has recently announced the transfer of 65 regularized layouts to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in a bid to ensure uninterrupted basic amenities for residents. The NIT will also transfer open spaces found in these layouts to the civic body. However, NMC keeping the public utility (PU) lands in these layouts with itself may create friction between the two planning authorities.
Under the Gunthewari Act, NIT regularizes unauthorized layouts and is mandated to develop infrastructure in regularized layouts and hand them over to the NMC. So far, the NIT has regularized 2,084 of the unauthorized layouts, but only 126 have been handed over to NMC. According to sources, NMC blames the NIT for inadequate infrastructure in some of the regularized layouts, but NIT claims otherwise.
The citizens living in regularized layouts are, unfortunately, the ones stuck in the middle of the conflict between the two planning authorities. The NIT is conducting an inquiry into the works executed for Manewada e-library, and it has decided to develop a commercial complex, sports complex, hall, and museum at the land adjacent to Sakkardara lake.
Additionally, the board approved the construction of a swimming pool worth ₹3.76 crore at the Ambedkar Sports Complex in Ahuja Nagar. The move is expected to benefit the residents of Ahuja Nagar and promote a healthy lifestyle.
It remains to be seen how smoothly the transfer of layouts from NIT to NMC will proceed, but citizens will likely be watching the situation closely.
