Nintendo hacker Gary Bowser denies involvement with Switch flash cart

Gary Bowser, a member of the infamous hacking group Team-Xecuter, has denied any involvement with the recently announced MIG-Switch flash cart. The flash cart, which has raised concerns about enabling the playing of illegally obtained ROMs on Nintendo Switch consoles, comes with an official disclaimer from MIG-Switch stating that it is intended only for legally owned games.

Bowser, who was released from prison last year after being sentenced for his participation in Team-Xecuter’s activities, still owes Nintendo £8 million ($10 million) in court-ordered damages. The notorious hacker recently spoke out against the allegations of his involvement with the flash cart on X (formerly Twitter) and further clarified his position on Discord.

According to reports from video game news outlet VGC, Bowser allegedly stated, I was the subject of DNS poisoning attack on my nameservers, I repaired the damage and changed all my passwords, but sadly people will talk, not what I needed just before Christmas. He also mentioned receiving threats through Skype, with the sender demanding monthly payments of $1,000 for 40 months under the threat of leaking sensitive information. Bowser underscored his unwillingness to engage with trolls or provide any comments on the matter.

While Bowser continues to assert his innocence, it’s important to note that the creation and distribution of flash carts for Nintendo consoles have faced legal ramifications in the past. The R4 flash cartridge, which allowed unauthorized ROMs of Nintendo DS games to be played without owning the original copy, triggered a legal crackdown from Nintendo in 2007.

As the investigation into the MIG-Switch flash cart continues, it remains to be seen how Bowser’s alleged connection with the device will unfold. Nintendo, known for its staunch defense of intellectual property rights, will likely be closely monitoring the situation.

In the meantime, the gaming community and authorities alike will be keeping a watchful eye on the developments surrounding the flash cart and its potential implications for the gaming industry.
