In a shocking incident that unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, a Nihang Sikh named Ramandeep Singh was arrested for allegedly killing a youth over suspicions of sacrilege at the Gurdwara Sri Chaura Khooh Sahib in Phagwara, Punjab. The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was found dead after being attacked multiple times with a sharp-edged weapon.
The incident occurred around 3 am, according to police reports. Prior to the incident, locals had noticed the youth, estimated to be around 30 years old and believed to be a migrant, wandering near the gurdwara late in the evening. As the night progressed, the gurdwara granthi Gurjant Singh and others went to use the washrooms after dinner, only to discover that one of the washrooms was locked from the inside. Suspecting an intruder, they demanded that the youth exit the washroom.
Tragically, the accused allegedly killed the youth while the granthi had left to file a complaint at the nearby police station. The police eventually arrested the suspect after discovering him hidden in a room within the gurdwara.
A video recorded by the accused prior to the killing shed light on the victim’s involvement, or lack thereof, in the gurdwara sacrilege. The youth claimed in the video that he had been sent by someone named Sukhi to commit the desecration in exchange for a sum of money. However, he admitted to not carrying out the act at all. The accused had even uploaded this video on social media platforms before perpetrating the crime.
ADGP Gurinder Singh Dhillon, who spoke to the media, confirmed the suspect’s arrest. He also mentioned that authorities were reviewing the CCTV footage from the surrounding area to further investigate the incident.
