Governors from the South-East region of Nigeria, along with other Igbo leaders, are scheduled to meet with President Bola Tinubu to discuss the escalating insecurity in the area. Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State confirmed this after a meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The South-East has been plagued by various security challenges, including banditry, kidnappings, and activities of unknown gunmen. Governor Uzodinma expressed concern over the persistence of insecurity, despite the efforts of communities and resources invested to tackle the issue. He emphasized that the leaders would seek the president’s support in addressing the security challenges in the region.
One of the key topics expected to be discussed during the meeting is the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the separatist leader who is currently facing treason charges from the federal government. In addition, the leaders will address the recurring sit-at-home orders issued by a faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). These orders have caused disruption and fear among the populace.
Governor Uzodinma clarified that the sit-at-home orders are not authorized by the state governments or the federal government. He noted that obedience to these orders stems from fear rather than actual endorsement. The governor also highlighted the need to manage people’s perception and restore confidence in the region.
Regarding the actions of Simon Ekpa, the leader of the Autopilot faction of IPOB who resides in Finland, Governor Uzodinma stated that diplomatic options to address his activities are within the federal government’s purview. He reiterated that the federal government is the appropriate platform to handle both local and foreign contributors to the region’s security challenges.
Furthermore, Governor Uzodinma clarified his administration’s stance on security votes. While he acknowledged the importance of providing governors with funds to manage security issues, he stated that he does not personally utilize security votes in Imo State. He emphasized the necessity for elected governors to have the latitude to operate and deliver results for their constituents.
In conclusion, the meeting between South-East governors, Igbo leaders, and President Bola Tinubu aims to address the rising insecurity in the region. The leaders seek collaboration with the federal government to tackle various security challenges, including the release of Nnamdi Kanu and the enforcement of sit-at-home orders by IPOB factions. The engagement with Tinubu is considered crucial in finding lasting solutions to the security issues facing the South-East region.
