Nigerian Navy Intercepts N200 Million Cannabis Shipment on Lagos Waters, Smugglers Flee

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy attached to NNS BEECROFT have successfully intercepted a large consignment of cannabis sativa on Lagos waters. The drug, reportedly being smuggled into Nigeria through the nation’s backwaters, was seized by the navy.

The estimated street value of the seized drug is over N200 million. The contraband, consisting of approximately 65 sacks, was recovered from two different locations in Lagos. This significant operation was made possible with the help of Falcon Eye, a cutting-edge maritime awareness technology used by the navy to track illicit activities.

Commodore Kolawale Oguntuga, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, addressed the press in Lagos. He confirmed that the interception took place in the Lekki and Badagry areas. The smugglers, upon sighting the naval gunboats on patrol, fled the scenes.

Commodore Oguntuga warned those involved in such illegal activities to cease their operations immediately or face consequences under the law. The navy remains committed to playing its part in defending the integrity of the nation and ensuring the safety of its waters for trade.

The navy constantly monitors and conducts surveillance on the nation’s waters using Falcon Eye technology. Our gunboats are always on patrol, keeping criminals away and maintaining a secure environment for maritime activities, he said. The seizure of this large consignment of drugs demonstrates our dedication to fulfilling these responsibilities.

The interception of this cannabis shipment highlights the ongoing efforts of Nigerian authorities to combat drug trafficking and safeguard the country from the negative social and economic impacts associated with such illegal activities. The Nigerian Navy continues to collaborate with other security agencies to maintain a strong presence on the nation’s waterways and ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens.

This successful operation, utilizing advanced technology and the bravery of navy personnel, serves as a deterrent to potential smugglers and criminals operating within Nigerian waters.
