Nigerian pilgrims who paid N2.8million ($6,990) to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) are allegedly struggling with poor feeding and lack of accommodation in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Specifically, pilgrims from Adamawa, Zamfara, and Bauchi states have reportedly not been provided with adequate food and bed spaces. Despite the fact that pilgrims have paid a hefty sum for this year’s pilgrimage, many still have to share hotel rooms with people from other states. Some pilgrims claim that they have not been fed since they arrived in the Holy Land and the meals that have eventually arrived were not served on time. The breakfast of some Zamfara pilgrims reportedly arrived at around 1 pm, while dinner arrived around 11 pm, when most of the pilgrims had gone to sleep. It is alleged that the NAHCON has not been fulfilling its responsibilities towards the pilgrims and that this has caused unrest among them. Last year, a similar scenario played out which means the pilgrims feel that they are not getting value for their money. As such, many are calling on the NAHCON chairman to intervene to ensure that adequate arrangements are put in place during the remainder of their stay in Medina.
